Anxiety is a normal human emotion. But, if it occurs too often or is severe, it can affect your quality of life. In those situations we often describe anxiety as a ‘disorder’. There are several types of anxiety disorders and people often have symptoms of more than one type.
Established at St Vincent's Hospital Sydney by Professor Gavin Andrews, AO MD (UNSW), the Virtual Clinic is led by Dr Mike Millard, CRUfAD Director. The Virtual Clinic conducts world-leading research into treating anxiety, depression and physical health conditions.
Our research has produced proven online programs available through THIS WAY UP. These can be prescribed by health professionals or used as self-help programs to improve wellbeing.
Providing effective treatment for anxiety and depressive disorders remains challenging. The Australian National Survey showed 20% of adults meet diagnostic criteria for these disorders, but less than 40% seek treatment.
We formed the Virtual Clinic in 2007 to improve access to evidence-based care. As part of CRUfAD, we conduct research and clinical trials for internet-based treatment programs for anxiety, depression, and physical health.
Evaluated programs are made available through our online platform THIS WAY UP and our in-person Anxiety Disorders Clinic at St Vincent's Hospital Sydney.
We regularly recruit volunteers for studies - a great way to help us find better treatments for our community.
